Passive fire protection (PFP) - what exactly is it?
In basic terms, PFP is one of three key components that form the structural fire protection and fire safety in a building. The other two being active types (e.g. sprinklers & hoses) and non active (e.g. alarms & detectors)
PFP systems are designed to contain fires, limit damage to property and prevent loss of life.
The use of fire separations, such as specific varieties of floors, walls & doors go a long way to achieving the right outcome.
PFP includes compartmentalization of the overall building through the use of fire - resistance rated walls and floors. Organization into smaller fire compartments, consisting of one or more rooms or floors, prevents or slows the spread of fire from the room of fire origin to other building spaces, limiting building damage and providing more time to the building occupants for emergency evacuation or to reach a point of refuge.
PFP systems must comply with, and provide the effectiveness expected by the building code.

Ultimately, your can't afford NOT to have adequate passive fire protection!
The value of lives, property and assets can be incalcuable. How much will it cost to protect your building from spread of fire?
Many older buildings have some form of compartmentation, some good some not good, to make the not so good into an effective seperation can be costly depending on the existing levels of workmanship and materials used in mechanical, electrical & plumbing services routed around the building. In new construction the costs to retro fit passive fire protection are negligable as trades are more aware of the building code and pentration breaches should be dealt with during construction.
